Harnessing SHARE Data to Advance Research and Societal Innovation

Abstract

This seminar will present an integrated perspective on the use of SHARE data to advance ageing research and inform evidence-based interventions.

The first part of the presentation Exploring Ageing through SHARE Data: From Research to Societal Impact will provide a synthesis of ongoing research activities leveraging SHARE datasets to address multidimensional aspects of ageing, including health, socioeconomic conditions, and social participation. Emphasis will be placed on translational outcomes and the role of SHARE data in shaping innovation strategies within European ageing-related initiatives.

The second part Polypharmacy among Older Adults: Leveraging SHARE Data for Health Research will focus on the problem of polypharmacy among older adults, discussing findings from two studies that utilized SHARE data to examine prevalence patterns, associated risk factors, and the implications for clinical and public health approaches. This section will highlight methodological considerations, key results, and future directions for research in this domain.

Biography

Elísio Costa is a Professor at the Department of Biological Sciences at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto, and coordinator of the Competence Centre on Active and Healthy Ageing of the University of Porto, Porto4Ageing, and a researcher at RISE-Health. His research focuses on innovation in health, active and healthy aging, and digital health approaches to promote better health outcomes for older adults. He has extensive experience in coordinating national and international research projects and is deeply involved in fostering innovation and collaborative networks.

Luís Midão is a Project Manager at the Competence Centre on Active and Healthy Ageing (Porto4Ageing) and a researcher at RISE-Health. His research focuses on frailty assessment, health literacy, and digital health, aiming to improve healthcare delivery and promote active and healthy aging. He has extensive experience in national and international research projects and works closely with interdisciplinary teams to develop and validate innovative tools and interventions to support older populations.
