The SHARE International Seminar Series (SISS) presents:

Women’s Caring Penalty at Retirement in Europe

Abstract

This study investigates the economic repercussions of informal caregiving on women’s retirement income in Europe. Utilizing data from SHARE, we find that women retiring for caregiving responsibilities experience a notably larger decline in earnings – approximately double that of their peers who retire for other reasons. This earnings drop persists in years post-retirement, highlighting the enduring impact of caregiving roles on women’s financial stability and contributing to the wider gender pension gap.
