Michael Bergmann ist ein Surveymethodiker mit einem Doktortitel in Sozialwissenschaften. Derzeit arbeitet er als Leiter der Abteilung Survey Methodology für den Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), wo er für die Koordinierung der Stichprobenziehung und Feldüberwachung in allen 28 SHARE-Ländern zuständig ist.
Er unterstützt zudem die methodische Entwicklung von SHARE, einschließlich der Einführung eines Multi-Mode-Erhebungsdesigns. Sein Forschungsinteresse gilt Methoden zur Verbesserung der Qualität von Umfragedaten und dabei insbesondere der Vermeidung von non-response und attrition, der Untersuchung von Auswirkungen verschiedener Befragungsmodi auf die Datenqualität in Panelstudien und der Analyse des Verhaltens von Interviewern. Was die inhaltliche Forschung betrifft, so ist er besonders an Fragen der Gesundheit und des Pflegebedarfs im Alter interessiert.
